From Telemetry to Tactics: Monitoring Your Voice Network Like an F1 Team

July 18, 2025 By Andrew

With the new Formula 1 movie currently dominating the summer box office, even casual fans are getting a taste of what makes this sport so captivating. The high-speed drama, the split-second decisions, the relentless pursuit of performance—it’s all on full display.

And for those of us already in the F1 fan club (as readers of our earlier piece on Formula 1 crashes and layers of protection may recall), this spotlight is a welcome excuse to talk telemetry.

In Formula 1, teams gather vast quantities of data from the car during every practice session and race. A team of engineers parses this data in real-time, filtering and analyzing it to provide strategic insight. But crucially, all this information is funneled through a single race engineer—the driver’s sole point of contact. This engineer distills the essential information and advises on tactical decisions: “Box this lap,” “Switch to hard tyres,” or “Watch your brake temperatures.”

It’s a model of how to manage complex systems under pressure—and one that’s directly relevant to anyone responsible for monitoring a modern IP voice network.

The Voice Network Pit Wall

Your Metaswitch-based voice network is constantly generating telemetry. The challenge is identifying what matters and acting on it before it impacts your customers.

CFS and MetaView: Managing the Call Core

The Call Feature Server (CFS) and MetaView Server (MVS) offer granular metrics on registrations, trunk utilization, call completions, and subscriber behaviors. With historical and real-time data (at 5-minute, hourly, and daily intervals), you can spot trends, identify service issues, and track usage across your entire subscriber base.

Features like Live Traffic Studies or Voice Quality Monitoring (VQM) provide visualizations of jitter, packet loss, and round-trip delay—critical for diagnosing quality issues across the VoIP path.

Perimeta SBC: The First Line of Defense

Perimeta’s statistics span signaling, media quality, system health, and interface performance. Whether accessed via CLI, SNMP, CSV exports, or dashboards like ServiceIQ Monitoring (SIMon), these insights help pinpoint:

  • Call setup failures
  • RTP media quality
  • SIP error rates
  • CPU/memory bottlenecks

You can set thresholds and alarms on key metrics—triggering alerts if usage spikes or failures occur. It’s a real-time radar for operational health.

Pulling It All Together: Focus, Filters, and Follow-Up

With so many data points available, how do you know what matters?

Start with three guiding principles:

1. Focus on Voice-Impacting Metrics

Prioritize stats that directly affect call quality and availability:

  • Packet loss, jitter, round-trip time
  • SIP error rates (e.g., 503 overloads, 403 blocks)
  • Trunk or session capacity nearing limits

These are your “driver alerts”—the things that must reach your metaphorical race engineer immediately.

2. Filter the Noise

Use alarms and thresholds strategically. Don’t monitor everything. Monitor what will help you act. If a trunk hits 80% capacity at 11 a.m. every weekday, that’s not a spike that requires an alarm — but it is a trend that should impact your capacity planning.

If you’re getting alerts all the time you’ll start to ignore them, so make sure you’re acting on what’s important, and eliminating alarms that are not important.

3. Follow Up with Action

Monitoring isn’t about observation—it’s about intervention. Ask:

  • Do I have enough capacity for next month’s growth?
  • Is my failover working as intended?
  • Am I proactively fixing small issues before they become big?

Use the data to drive maintenance, upgrades, and customer care. Data without action is just noise.

Need a Pit Crew?

If your voice quality has hit some bumps in the road—or if you’re unsure whether your telemetry is telling the full story — Award Consulting can help. Our IP networking experts can:

  • Review and optimize your CFS and Perimeta monitoring setup
  • Identify root causes of intermittent call quality issues
  • Validate your network’s redundancy and failover capabilities
